The BESS Group is one of three specialist Evidence Synthesis Groups (ESGs) funded to conduct evidence syntheses (reviews of existing research, to find and summarise all relevant evidence) to support the work of the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC). The UK NSC advises the government and NHS on use of screening programs. Bristol is an internationally renowned centre of excellence in evidence synthesis, having been at the forefront of methodological advances in this area for over 20 years. The BESS group is part of the Bristol Evidence synthesis, Appraisal and Modelling (BEAM) Centre.
